The pain

Multiple CI errors blocking automated updates and complicating broken test management.

Who'd pay

Software development and DevOps teams managing multiple repositories with complex CI pipelines.

Signal that triggered it

"A fix-PR agent was dispatched with scope limited to "fastest additive unblock." It ran `black` cleanly (15 files reformatted) and applied `continue-on-error: true` to the `type-check` job, but hit a hard stop on the skip-broken-tests step after discovering the failure surface is 5× larger than initial estimate."

chore(ci-health): worldenergydata main CI — 22+ collection errors blocking 5 Dependabot PRs (#329-#333)

Published: Apr 21, 2026

Repository: vamseeachanta/workspace-hub Author: vamseeachanta ## Context Part of ecosystem CI health meta-issue #2424 (6 of 7 visible repos red on main). `vamseeachanta/worldenergydata` main CI has been red since 2026-04-16 due to 3 independent defects, all inherited by 5 open Dependabot PRs (#329-#333, #330-xlsxwriter spot-check confirmed identical failure signatures). ## Investigation summary (performed 2026-04-21 from workspace-hub session) A fix-PR agent was dispatched with scope limited to "fastest additive unblock." It ran `black` cleanly (15 files reformatted) and applied `continue-on-error: true` to the `type-check` job, but hit a hard stop on the skip-broken-tests step after discovering the failure surface is 5× larger than initial estimate. ### Root causes on main 1. Black/lint — 15-17 test files unformatted in various test directories. 2. 22+ collection errors due to missing modules and files. 3. ~100 mypy errors in source code. ### Repo-specific plumbing details discovered - pytest.ini overrides pyproject.toml ignore options. - Custom pytest_ignore_collect hook controls test skipping. ## Three paths forward (user choice needed) Option 1: Expand ignore list to skip broken test files, unblocking Dependabot PRs but hiding broken tests. Option 2: Verify CI test job scope to reduce risk. Source: GITHUB
